Dealership IT Services in St. Louis, on Both Sides of the River

St. Louis is one metro that sits in two states. A dealer group can run a store in St. Charles County and another in Belleville, a short drive apart on I-64, and answer to two attorneys general, two breach laws and two sets of rules about what goes in a customer letter. Most of the year nobody thinks about it. Then something goes wrong and it’s the first question your lawyer asks.

The daily work is the same everywhere. Every rooftop needs the same DMS access, the same phone setup and the same logins whether it’s in West County or across the Poplar Street Bridge. Easy on paper. It gets harder when one IT person is driving between them on I-270 and the phone keeps ringing.

We’ve been doing this since 1997, and we work with client dealerships in the St. Louis metro today. Helion Technologies supports automotive and heavy truck dealerships and nobody else, and this page is part of our dealership IT services by location hub. Here’s what’s specific to St. Louis, starting with the two rulebooks.

  • Remote firstMost tickets close by phone or remote session, so a backup on the bridges never decides how long a store stays down.
  • On site when it needs handsField technicians are dispatched for a dead switch, new cabling or a store moving into a new building in Wentzville.
  • Watched around the clockSecurity support runs 24/7, with live, US-based analysts who step in the moment they see signs of an attack.

Our dealership help desk works from Baltimore, one hour ahead of you. Your St. Louis stores reach a live technician Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time, and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern. After-hours callbacks come with our help desk plans, and onsite visits are included on our Full Service plan. Ask any provider for the help desk metrics a dealer principal should see, and compare.

One Metro, Two Rulebooks for St. Louis Dealers

Neither Missouri nor Illinois has a comprehensive consumer privacy law. That part’s simple. Both have a breach notice law, though, and they don’t match, so a group with stores on both sides of the Mississippi has two sets of deadlines to meet after the same incident. Here’s how Missouri’s breach law, RSMo 407.1500, lines up against Illinois’s Personal Information Protection Act.

The federal piece is the one people forget. Under the FTC Safeguards Rule, a breach that involves 500 or more customers has to be reported to the FTC within 30 days of discovery, no matter which side of the river the store is on. Every store, both states. So the real job is having one incident plan that already knows all three clocks, and a written information security program behind it. Our dealership compliance team builds both, and the incident response plan template is a fair place to start on your own.

Illinois stores carry one more rule. A fingerprint time clock at a store in Belleville or Collinsville falls under the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act, which wants written consent and a retention policy before anyone scans in. We cover that, and the Illinois-Indiana line, on our Chicago page. Stores in other states too? Compare them in dealership privacy laws by state, starting with the Illinois entry.

Dealership Cybersecurity in St. Louis

Here’s one that keeps happening to dealers. A customer trades in a truck that still has a loan on it, and the business office asks the lender for a payoff letter. The real letter comes. A day later a second email arrives from an address one letter off from the lender’s, with “updated wire instructions” and a polite note about a bank change. If the office wires the payoff to that account, the money is usually gone, the lien is still there, and the deal now costs the store twice.

That’s an email problem before it’s a money problem. CDK Global’s 2024 survey of dealers found that 35% had a cyberattack or incident that year, and 92% of them said it did real financial or operational damage. Our dealership cybersecurity work covers the store’s side. Email security catches lookalike domains before they reach the inbox, a live, US-based security operations center watches the network through managed detection and response, and multi-factor authentication goes on email and remote access. Security awareness training teaches your business office to call the lender back on a number they already had, every single time. No exceptions.

If you want to see how these emails get built, our breakdown of the anatomy of a phishing attack walks through one. Staff pasting deal details into a free chatbot is the newer risk, and Managed AI gives them a private, governed workspace instead. Want to know where your logins, backups and email stand today? Start with a complimentary IT and cybersecurity assessment. We’ll write the gaps down.

Storm Season at a St. Louis Store

Spring here can turn fast. On May 16, 2025, an EF3 tornado hit the county and the city. It crossed into Madison County, Illinois, and broke up outside Granite City. The National Weather Service put its widest point at 1.8 miles, the widest in the region since 1950. Power goes out on days like that, lines come down, and a store can lose its internet for days without a scratch on the building.

What keeps a store selling is mostly dull work done ahead of time. We put battery backup on the network and phone gear, and a second internet connection from a different carrier takes over on its own when the first one drops. Customers never notice. Dealership phone systems in the cloud can ring through to cell phones when the building is dark, so customers still reach the service desk. We watch the equipment remotely, which means we usually know a store is down before the store calls. That’s part of our dealership network services.

For the worst days, we keep copies of your data well outside the region and prove they restore. That’s the work behind backup and disaster recovery for dealerships, and our DMS outage plan covers the day the problem belongs to your vendor instead of you.

Where We Work Around St. Louis

Missouri has 364 franchised new-car dealers and Illinois has 698, according to NADA Data 2025. That’s a lot of rooftops. The St. Louis share spreads from West County and St. Charles County out along I-70 to Wentzville, down through South County toward Arnold, and across the river to Belleville, Collinsville and Edwardsville. Truck dealers tend to sit near the interchanges, since I-70, I-44, I-55 and I-64 all meet here and a lot of the freight moving between Kansas City, Chicago, Memphis and Indianapolis runs right past their service bays. Missouri’s franchised dealers are represented by the Missouri Automobile Dealers Association, and the Illinois side by the Illinois Automobile Dealers Association.

A group spread over that much ground, in two states, gets very little from one IT person in one building. The math doesn’t work. Every rooftop needs the same setup and the same answer when it calls. Stories from groups that made the switch are in Helion’s dealership case studies.

Does Helion Technologies offer dealership IT services in St. Louis?
Yes. Helion Technologies supports automotive and heavy truck dealerships across St. Louis City and County, St. Charles and Jefferson counties and the Illinois side of the metro, with managed IT, cybersecurity, Tekion enablement, backup and recovery, and FTC Safeguards compliance. Most help is remote, a support agent answers in 82 seconds on average, and field technicians are dispatched for the jobs that need hands.
What do managed IT services in St. Louis cost a dealership?
It depends on how many stores you run and which services you choose, so we don’t publish a rate card. What we can tell you is what sits inside the price. After-hours callbacks come with our help desk plans, and onsite visits are included on our Full Service plan. Comparing providers first? Read our look at the best managed IT providers for dealerships and how a generalist MSP compares with a dealership IT provider, then request a price quote for a real figure. The dealership IT budget checklist and our comparison of in-house vs managed IT help with next year’s numbers.
Does Helion have an office in St. Louis?
No. Helion Technologies is headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, and supports St. Louis-area stores remotely, with field technicians dispatched when a job needs someone on site. Our guide to onsite vs remote IT support explains when that is. Your St. Louis stores reach a live technician Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time, and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern.
We have stores in Missouri and Illinois. Whose breach rules do we follow?
Both, plus the federal one, because the rules follow where your customers live, not where the store sits. Missouri brings in its Attorney General and the credit bureaus above 1,000 residents, Illinois brings in its Attorney General above 500, and the FTC hears within 30 days once 500 or more customers are involved. Your attorney makes the legal call. We keep the logs and the plan ready so the call is quick.
How does a St. Louis dealership stay compliant with the FTC Safeguards Rule?
The same way a dealer anywhere else does, with a written security program, a qualified individual in charge of it and controls you can prove. That means multi-factor authentication, encryption, testing, vendor oversight and a yearly report to the board or owner. Our FTC Safeguards Rule checklist walks through each piece, and the Safeguards risk assessment template is a good first step.
We already have an IT manager. Do we have to replace them?
Not at all. With co-managed IT, your IT manager keeps the keys, the vendor calls and the final say, while Helion adds the help desk, a co-managed security operations center and extra hands for the projects one person can’t cover from St. Charles to Belleville. They stay in charge. They just stop working alone. Our co-managed IT responsibility matrix shows who owns what.
Do you support heavy truck dealers around St. Louis?
We do, and we have for years. A truck store off I-70 or I-55 keeps different hours than the car store across town, often runs a different DMS, and has a parts counter that’s busy before sunrise. Different animal. We support Karmak and Procede shops. For security, read heavy truck dealership cybersecurity and how the FTC Safeguards Rule applies to heavy truck dealers. Service trucks carry laptops and customer data off the lot, so read mobile service security for truck dealerships too.
