What Dealership IT Services in Houston Have to Cover

Houston doesn’t have one auto row. It has a dozen of them, strung along the Katy Freeway, the Gulf Freeway and the Southwest Freeway, and a group with stores in Katy and Clear Lake can lose an hour each way just getting a manager between the two. Big city. Long drives. The network still has to act like every rooftop is in the same building, with the same DMS, the same phones and the same logins.

That’s the job we do all day. Helion Technologies has worked only with automotive and heavy truck dealerships since 1997, and this page belongs to our dealership IT services by location hub. What follows is the part that’s specific to Houston.

  • Remote firstMost tickets close by phone or remote session, so a fix never sits in traffic on the 610 Loop.
  • On site when it needs handsField technicians come out for a failed switch, a cabling job or a new rooftop going live.
  • Watched around the clockA US-based team monitors networks, servers and security alerts 24/7, storm season included.

Then there’s the weather, which nobody in Houston needs explained. Hurricane Beryl came ashore on July 8, 2024 and left 2.6 million Texas customers without power, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Some stores sat dark for days. A dealership that can’t reach its DMS can’t write a repair order or close a deal, so the plan for the next storm matters as much as the plan for a normal Tuesday.

Live help runs 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central, Monday through Saturday, and after-hours calls, weekend coverage and field dispatch are part of the monthly number. No meter running. Day to day, that’s managed IT support for dealerships. Have an IT manager you like? Groups with their own staff use co-managed IT and keep that person in charge.

A Texas Dealer Group Went From Three Networks to One

Here’s a Texas example, and half of it happened in Houston. A multi-store dealer group with rooftops in both the Houston and Dallas areas was running three separate networks, each with its own vendors and its own monthly bill. Helion combined the three into one. By the numbers in Helion’s case study, the group’s monthly network spend fell 60% while data throughput went up by a factor of more than 1,000, which is the kind of jump that changes what a network can be used for.

The savings were nice. What the managers talked about was the drive. With a network that could finally carry it, Helion put high-definition video conferencing in the conference room at every store, so a monthly finance meeting with more than 60 managers and partners stopped costing people half a day on the road between two cities that sit about four hours apart. They stayed in their stores. Deals kept moving.

The group’s chief financial officer put the total at about $1 million added to the bottom line. We don’t name clients on this page. Running several rooftops yourself? See how we work with dealer groups.

Three Rules a Houston Dealership Answers To

Good news first. Texas is simpler than a lot of states on this. One federal rule does most of the work, the state privacy law largely steps aside for a dealer that arranges financing, and the state breach law covers anyone who holds a customer file. Here’s the short version of all three.

RuleWhat it isDate or deadlineAt the store
FTC Safeguards RuleFederal rule for dealers that arrange financing or leasingAppliesAmended rule in force June 9, 2023A written security program, a qualified individual, multi-factor authentication, encryption, testing and vendor oversight.
Texas Data Privacy and Security ActTexas’s comprehensive consumer privacy lawDealership exemptIn force July 1, 2024Financial institutions under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act are exempt as whole entities.
Texas breach notification lawBusiness and Commerce Code, Section 521.053Applies60 days to notify peopleTell the Texas attorney general within 30 days when 250 or more Texans are affected.

So why does a dealership get a pass on the state privacy law? A store that arranges financing or leases vehicles counts as a financial institution under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, and the Texas statute exempts those as whole entities. That’s the usual reading. Run it past your attorney anyway, because a group can own a rental counter or a body shop that doesn’t finance a thing.

The federal job doesn’t get any smaller. The Safeguards Rule in 16 CFR 314.4 still expects a written security program and a notice to the FTC within 30 days when a breach touches 500 or more consumers, and Texas keeps its own deadline on top of that through the attorney general’s data breach reporting process. Two clocks, one incident. Our dealership compliance team runs both out of one program.

Auto Dealership Cybersecurity in Houston

Houston had a front-row seat in June 2024. When CDK Global went down, Group 1 Automotive, the public dealer group headquartered here, told investors in an SEC filing that it had activated its incident response procedures and isolated its systems from CDK’s platform, and that all of its U.S. dealerships kept doing business on alternative processes. That’s the right playbook. It’s also a lot of paper. As we wrote back then, CDK wasn’t a one-time wake-up call.

No store can prevent a vendor’s outage. What it can control is its own side of the connection, and that’s where our dealership cybersecurity work sits. A live, US-based security operations center watches the network day and night. Multi-factor authentication goes on email and remote access. And backups get a real test restore before hurricane season, because a backup nobody has ever restored is a guess, and the week a storm is sitting in the Gulf is a bad week to find that out.

Not sure where your stores stand today? A complimentary IT and cybersecurity assessment puts the answer in writing.

Where We Work Around Greater Houston

Texas has 1,285 franchised new-car dealers, according to NADA Data 2025, and a big share of them sit somewhere between Conroe to the north and Galveston down on the coast, along freeways most of us know a little too well. Group 1 Automotive and Gillman Automotive Group are both headquartered in Houston. So is Doggett on the truck and equipment side. We name them for scale, not as clients. And with the port and the ship channel next door, this is as much a truck town as a car town.

Statewide, franchised dealers are represented by the Texas Automobile Dealers Association in Austin. Our own headquarters is in Baltimore, about 1,400 miles from the Gulf, and that turns out to be useful in August. A storm that knocks out Houston’s power doesn’t knock out ours.

Does Helion Technologies offer dealership IT services in Houston?
Yes. Helion Technologies supports automotive and heavy truck dealerships across Greater Houston with managed IT, cybersecurity, Tekion support and FTC Safeguards compliance. Most help is remote and a support agent answers in 82 seconds on average, while field technicians take the jobs that need hands.
What do managed IT services in Houston cost for a dealership?
The price follows your store count and the services you pick, so there’s no published rate card. After-hours support, weekend coverage and field dispatch are inside the monthly number, which means a Saturday outage in Pasadena doesn’t show up three weeks later as its own invoice with a trip charge on it. Still comparing vendors? Our look at the best managed IT providers for dealerships is a fair place to start. A price quote request gets you a real figure.
Does the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act apply to Houston car dealerships?
Usually not. The law took effect July 1, 2024 and exempts financial institutions subject to the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act as whole entities, which generally covers a dealership that arranges financing or leasing. The FTC Safeguards Rule and the Texas breach notification law still apply in full. Check with your attorney.
What happens to our IT support when a hurricane hits Houston?
Support doesn’t go dark with the city. Helion is headquartered in Baltimore and monitoring runs 24/7, so we can see which of your stores have dropped offline and which are back. The real work happens earlier, though. Backups get a test restore before the season starts, and that’s the part worth asking any provider about.
How fast does a Houston store reach a person?
82 seconds is the average wait to reach a live support agent. Live help runs 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central, Monday through Saturday. Monitoring never stops.
We already have an IT director. Can you work alongside them?
That’s exactly what co-managed IT is for. Your IT director keeps the keys and the vendor relationships, and Helion adds the help desk depth, the security operations and the project hands that one person can’t stretch across several rooftops. Some groups start there and move to full service later. Others never do.
Do you support heavy truck dealers near the Port of Houston?
We do. Heavy truck stores have been part of Helion’s client base from the start, and they come with their own problems, like parts counters that open before sunrise and a DMS the car side has never heard of. We support Karmak and Procede shops. For the security side, read heavy truck dealership cybersecurity.
