The Clock is Ticking – Why Upgrading to Windows 11 is Crucial

By Erik NachbahrAugust 31, 2023 · 2 min read

Microsoft has announced that support for Windows 10 will end on October 14, 2025. While it may seem like a distant date, failing to upgrade your operating system by then could have serious consequences – including potential violations of the FTC’s Safeguards Rule.  Upgrading to Windows 11 is not just a matter of staying up-to-date but instead it’s a critical step in safeguarding your dealership’s systems, data, finances, and reputation.

Cybersecurity at Stake

Continuing to use Windows 10 after the end of support is a cybersecurity issue waiting to happen. When Microsoft stops providing security updates, your network becomes vulnerable to new and evolving cyberattacks. Cybercriminals are quick to exploit these vulnerabilities and actively seek out targets that are not properly protected.

The Trusted Platform Module (TPM)

To upgrade to Windows 11, you’ll need a PC equipped with a Trusted Platform Module (TPM). A TPM is a specialized chip designed to provide hardware-based security functions. This secure crypto-processor performs cryptographic operations, making it extremely difficult for malicious software to tamper with its functions.

Enhanced Security

The TPM chip plays a pivotal role in improving your PC’s overall security. By securely generating and storing cryptographic keys, it helps prove your identity and authenticates your device, preventing unauthorized access and data breaches.

New vs. Old PCs

One crucial point to note is that while newer PCs come equipped with a TPM chip, older ones do not. If your PC is several years old, upgrading to Windows 11 will likely require investing in a new computer. This is a reality that many will face very soon.

Anticipating Future Demand

As the Windows 11 deadline approaches, demand for PCs with TPM chips is expected to soar. To protect your dealership, it would be prudent to plan ahead and secure Windows 11 compatible devices well before the 2025 deadline. Waiting until the last minute will leave you struggling with backorder issues, potentially forcing you to continue using Windows 10 past its end of life.

The Consequences of Delay

If you procrastinate and continue running Windows 10 after support ends, you’re essentially a sitting duck for cybercriminals. With no software security patches from Microsoft, your system becomes an easy target for attacks. This can result in data breaches, financial losses, and a tarnished reputation.  Don’t wait until it’s too late; invest in your cybersecurity now to ensure a your dealership remains safe.
